April Volunteer of the Month Glenna Walser, Loaves & Fishes Resource Center
Resource Center Volunteer Glenna Walser joined Loaves & Fishes Centers after the big ice storm in January 2004. She had recently relocated to Portland and needed something to keep her busy. Her daughter, Lynn, found Loaves & Fishes on the Internet and sent her mother over to check it out.
“I did office work for a couple of months and then took a break,” Glenna said. “About a year ago, I got a call asking me if I’d consider taking on a special project for the contract program and I’ve been at it ever since.” Glenna sorts and individually bags sets of flatware for the contract program, which sends out more than 300 meals daily.
Glenna and her husband, Larry, were married nearly 54 years and lived in the same house in Spokane for 50 years. Glenna was a stay-at-home mom with her two daughters, Lynn and Leslie, until the youngest was 16 and then she went back to work. She worked a variety of jobs until she retired. Her husband was a driver for Greyhound Bus Lines. When her husband passed away, she stayed in Spokane about a year and then moved to Portland to be closer to her daughter.
“I’ve never worked anyplace where the people are so nice and so willing to help one another,” Glenna said. “My boss, Bruce, is great! He’s there when I need him, but leaves me alone to do my work. Coming into Loaves & Fishes gives me something to do, since I’ve never been the kind of person who can just sit around and do nothing.”
Glenna also volunteers for Bridgeport United Church of Christ and enjoys knitting and crocheting.
