Girl Scouts—Columbia River Council is donating 2,800 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to Loaves & Fishes Centers, The Meals-On-Wheels People. The cookies will be delivered to the Loaves & Fishes Centers’ Central Kitchen on Wednesday, April 9, at 3:30 p.m. Local Girl Scouts and Loaves & Fishes Centers Executive Director Joan Smith will be on hand to help unload the cookies. The Loaves & Fishes Centers Central Kitchen is located at 7710 SW 31st in Portland.
The Girl Scouts have donated enough cookies to provide dessert for all seniors served by Loaves & Fishes Centers for three full days. This represents 15,000 servings of dessert for the nonprofit agency. Loaves & Fishes Centers serves 5,000 meals each weekday to seniors in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties.
The gift is a result of the Gift of Caring campaign held during the Girl Scouts’ annual cookie sale last month. Area Girl Scouts asked people to purchase a box of Girl Scout Cookies to donate to homebound seniors served by Loaves & Fishes Centers throughout the metro area.
“The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the leading business and economic literacy program for girls,” said Cynthia Hamilton, CEO of Girl Scouts—Columbia River Council. “With this partnership we can help build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.”
“We are delighted with the donation from the Girl Scouts,” said Loaves & Fishes Centers Executive Director Joan Smith. “Not only does it represent a substantial savings to us, but it helps involve children with volunteering and the elderly in their community.”
Since 1970 Loaves & Fishes Centers has provided a nutritional and social lifeline for seniors through 35 meal sites in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties and Meals-On-Wheels delivery to homebound seniors. With the help of more than 7,500 volunteers, the nonprofit, nonsectarian agency now serves 5,000 meals daily and more than 1.3 million meals each year. Loaves & Fishes Centers was named one of the “Ten Most Admired Companies” in the non profit category in Oregon by The Portland Business Journal in 2006.
