Portland area shoppers donated more than $230,000 at local grocers during Loaves & Fishes Centers’ Donate Dinner campaign in November. Shoppers were encouraged to Donate Dinner for homebound seniors when they checked out at participating grocers between Nov. 22 and 26. Funds will be used to provide hot, noon meals for seniors served by Loaves & Fishes Centers, The Meals-On-Wheels People. Now in its fifth year, Donate Dinner has evolved into one of the agency’s largest fundraising events of the year.
Nearly 1,500 volunteers staffed the stores during the five days of the campaign to greet customers and distribute Donate Dinner cards.
The Donate Dinner campaign helps Loaves & Fishes Centers serve more than 5,000 Portland-area seniors every weekday. The agency depends on such community contributions for nearly 65 percent of its funding.
“We are amazed at the generosity of our customers during the holiday season,” said Brian Rohter, CEO of New Seasons Market and honorary chair of the event. “We can’t always directly help our parents or grandparents because of distance or circumstances. But we can reach out to the seniors who live near us through Donate Dinner. Thanks to everyone who contributed this year.”
